Utica College Now Offers Nurses a Convenient Way to Earn a Baccalaureate Degree Online
Utica, NY (PRWEB) September 11, 2008 -- Utica College, responding to the nation's critical nursing shortage, will now offer a program providing the registered nurse an exciting and accessible opportunity to complete the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Without disruption in their current work schedule, nurses can complete requirements for the bachelor's degree by taking online courses. Completion of the RN-BS degree provides nurses the flexibility to integrate their education with their personal and professional responsibilities.
The U.S. Department of Labor recently identified registered nursing as the fastest growing occupation through 2012, yet less than 50 percent of working nurse professionals has obtained their bachelor's degree. Utica College now celebrates a nursing program taught by its prestigious faculty that is available online providing easy accessibility for working nurses. The college is prepared to advance the nursing workforce for a profession that is experiencing incredible growth and earning potential.
The National Council on Nurse Education and Practice (NACNEP) has appealed to the nursing workforce urging that at least two-thirds of registered nurses hold higher degrees in nursing by 2010. Utica College is spearheading this initiative by granting academic credit for work experience and national certification.
The online RN-BS curriculum covers a diverse range of topics including health assessment, clinical pharmacology, future trends in nursing, current professional issues, nursing management and community health nursing. Major-related courses include human genetics; cultures, health and healing and professional ethics. There is also an interesting array of liberal arts and nursing electives from which to choose. Courses are formatted in two eight-week sessions each semester.
Students are required to fulfill a minimum of 120 credits to complete the program, with 67 credit hours from general education requirements and 53 credit hours from nursing courses. Transfer credit is granted depending on previous academic preparation.
"The nursing profession has changed dramatically in the last few years," said Judith Dyne, RN, ANP, director of the RN-BS program at Utica College. "Obtaining the bachelor's degree better educates nurses about the advancements in the field, including best practices in patient care and management. Career choices become more available and the potential for increased earning potential is always a plus."
