Hofstra University Goes Global with Online Computer Science Degree

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY (PRWEB) November 21, 2007 -- Beginning in January 2008, Hofstra University will offer its first completely online degree program with the launch of the online Master of Science in Computer Science (http://www.computerscience.hofstra.edu).

"We feel it is the right time for Hofstra to enter the online learning arena," said Hofstra Program Coordinator for the MSCS program, Ronald Chalmers. "The technology currently available makes it possible to produce online courses of study that are equal to on-campus education and meet Hofstra's high academic standards. We look forward to extending the benefits of Hofstra's master's degree in computer science to students worldwide. In the process we hope to develop highly qualified computer science professionals who can make a positive impact on the profession."

Designed for those who are already working professionals, this 30 semester-hour master's degree program can be completed in as little as 18 months without interrupting the student's work schedule. Part-time online students are expected to take one course every seven weeks.

Successful graduates of Hofstra University's online MSCS program (http://www.computerscience.hofstra.edu) will enhance their computer science knowledge to become skilled practitioners who can achieve career advancement and leadership positions within their company and industry. The addition of the MSCS will also help students interested in pursuing doctoral studies in computer science or related fields.

Courses are designed to build a strong foundation and breadth in computer science theory, systems and advanced software applications. Online classes use a secure Web-based platform for all online coursework. Applications for the online MSCS program are accepted throughout the year, with six enrollment start times per year.

"The course of study is tailored to help students narrow down their area of specialization and develop expertise in that area," said Department Chair Gerda Kamberova. "The degree is on the forefront of current computer science practice offering students practical cutting-edge knowledge through courses such as software project management, mobile device programming, network security, and concurrent and parallel computing."
